Watercolour Madras Check Waffle Tea Towel
Layered watercolour washes meet the deep texture of organic cotton waffle weave in a hand-painted check design that brings painterly warmth to kitchen work.
I painted this pattern sitting at my studio desk, layering thin washes of watercolour pigment onto heavyweight paper until the lines bled softly into one another. I wanted to rethink the classic Madras check - taking a traditional, structured weave and breathing fresh movement into it through liquid colour. The result is a print that feels alive, where soft terracotta, muted sage, and warm ochre intersect without rigid edges.
To bring the painting off the paper, I chose a sturdy but soft 100% organic cotton waffle weave. The honeycomb structure creates a tactile, dimensional surface that catches light and holds onto moisture effortlessly. As you dry dishes or rest a hot loaf of sourdough beneath it, the deep waffle pockets go to work, absorbing water quickly while staying soft in your hands.
Every batch is designed in Britain and digitally printed in China to preserve every brushstroke, soft pigment puddle, and subtle tonal shift from the original artwork.
This tea towel brings a piece of quiet studio craft right into the heart of your home. It grows softer and more supple with every turn through the wash.
